When people ask me what it costs to start a business, they usually mean money. And yes, the financial cost is real — tools, hosting, advertising, legal fees, accounting. It adds up fast.
But the costs nobody warns you about are the ones that hit hardest.
The Mental Cost
Running a startup means your brain never fully switches off. You're thinking about your business in the shower, at dinner, at 2am when you can't sleep. The mental load of being responsible for every decision, every outcome, every setback — it's relentless.
The Social Cost
Your friends will stop understanding what you do. Social events become harder because your world is consumed by something most people can't relate to. You'll cancel plans because something urgent came up. Again.
The Emotional Cost
There are days when everything feels impossible. When a launch flops, when a customer complains, when you check your bank account and wonder if this was all a terrible idea. Imposter syndrome becomes your constant companion.
But Here's the Thing
Despite all of this, I wouldn't change it. Building something from nothing is one of the most fulfilling things I've ever done. The key is going in with your eyes open and building a support system around you.
